Who we are:
The California Council of the Blind is an 83-year-old grassroots non-profit organization with chapters and affiliates across California primarily made up of blind and low vision members. We come from all walks of life and work collaboratively to improve the quality of life for all Californians who are blind or who have low vision.

We serve people across the continuum of the blindness experience including people who are completely blind; people who were born blind or became blind as children; people who have lost their sight due to a medical condition or traumatic incident; people who have low vision, seniors losing their sight, and the many parents, spouses, siblings, employers and care givers of the blind.

We are uniquely positioned to take on the task of empowering persons with vision loss and their families, providing practical support to these families, educating the public effectively, and advising policymakers and program providers serving the blindness community on what will best meet our needs as persons with vision loss. In pursuit of our mission, we focus on Crisis intervention, College, Career, and Civil rights.

Our Impact: The California Council of the Blind benefitted from 40,409 volunteer hours in 2016 which is equivalent to $952,036.04 in in-kind services. Since our inception, we have awarded over ¼ million dollars in cash scholarships to blind students; Provided over $300,000 in crisis support dollars, and have provided over 25,000 referrals to community services across California.

Testimonials

“I am 92 years old this year and have been a member of the CCB since 1949 so, I have invested 68 years of my life in the effort. The CCB helped me to get where I am today through consistent encouragement, acceptance, peer support and camaraderie. Every day I wake up and am proud to be a part of an organization that has made, is making and will make a positive difference in the lives of the blind and visually impaired.” – Cathie

“What matters most to me about being a CCB member is the fellowship with other disabled people and working on things that help us make a difference.” – Gerry

“The most important thing that the CCB has done for me is train me as a “Social Action Activist”. I am no longer silent! The CCB empowered me to have a voice and a choice. I am now an active member of my employee union, stick up for others and make my voice heard whenever it needs to be.” – Christy

“I have attended 41 national conventions and 55 state conventions. I learned something new at each one and treasured the experience. The things that I have been most passionate about in my time at the CCB have been the peer support, the networking and friendship, and the education on blindness, employment, and volunteer opportunities.”
– Bernice
